The main function of the Anti-Corruption Commission as stated in section 5(1) is, “… to investigate instances of alleged or suspected corruption referred to it by any person or authority or which has come to its attention, whether by complaint or otherwise and to take such steps as may be necessary for the eradication or suppression of corrupt practices.”

The Commission does so through the Investigations and Prosecutions Department which comprises both an Investigations Unit and a Prosecution Unit.

The Investigations and Prosecutions Department is structured in a way that allows the Prosecutors to provide adequate legal advice to Investigators from the inception of all enquiries up to conclusion, and for the Commissioner in due course to submit prosecution dockets to the Attorney General for consideration and institution of prosecution as provided for in sections 36 (1) and 48 (1) & (2) of the Anti-Corruption act 2000(As amended).

INVESTIGATIONS BRANCH
The Investigation Unit is structured in such a way as to meet the growing demand of the nation's outcry to minimize if not eradicate corruption completely. The unit is currently headed by a Principal Investigations Officer. The Investigation unit is divided into three main operational sub-units: -a Re-active and two Pro-active sub-units. Each unit is headed by a Senior Investigation Officer (SIO) directly responsible for the supervision and mentoring of their units and they in turn report of the Head of Investigations.

The Investigation Branch also has a Court Unit which was introduced in 2003. The Court Unit has played an important role in overseeing and liaising with the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice in order to secure witnesses, facilitating and serving of exhibits on all parties concerned and monitoring of all ACC cases in the courts.

The Commission has a system in place to receive complaints through its Report Center from the public. Complaints received by the Report Centre are sent to the Rapid Response Team comprising of the Commissioner, Acting Director, Investigations and Prosecutions Department, Head of Investigations, the Legal Officer and the Report Centre Manager. This committee meets twice every week to deliberate and decide on all complaints received and can also meet at any time the need arises.
